Glenn's Year 7 Library Activity

In these unusual times it was Glenn’s House who first experienced the Year 7 library activity this year which for once was not in the library but in their tutor room which felt slightly strange! Having introduced ourselves we started with a discussion on Heroes and Villains - what makes a good hero or villain? There were loads of suggestions and participation in the quiz although Voldemort came up way too frequently! Reading for Pleasure and good Sleep Hygiene were then explored before we explained the new Click and Collect system to them as sadly they cannot come into the library at the moment.

Year 7 Edwards' Library Activity

Edwards' House gave us a colourful start to the new school year in the first six weeks of term. We kicked off with some new games, tasks and discussions. There a was heated discussion on the greatest heroes and villains in children’s literature, looking how what constitutes a hero and a villain has changed over the years. Then we discussed bad book covers and how publishers sell their books to audiences through good design,  promotion and marketing. Finally we talked about the book cover characteristics of different genres, and how they give the reader an idea of the story without giving too much away.

Diamond's House Year 7 Library Activity

Thank you for joining us for the most recent stretch of activities in the Library, Diamond's House! We had some great discussions with you and one of the most heated and successful Library scavenger hunts ever!

This competitive bunch really took note in the discussions and showed themselves to be enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

In our first discussion on fiction, where to find it, how to find it and how we choose what to read we looked at characters, heroes and villains, genre and book cover design as ways of getting stuck into reading what we want to read and exploring new things.

We looked at typography and lettering, colour, shade and contrast, imagery, blurb and spine design and then handed over to Diamond's imagination to create their own book covers. This session produced one of our favourite book covers so far, check out Liv's rendering of Arsenic For Tea by Robin Stevens:
