Hilliard’s have performed
brilliantly in the Library over these last six weeks, culminating in a very
close call in the final quiz scores! Us Librarians were very impressed with the
group’s attention to detail, interesting questions and the unique discussions
that ensued, thank you Hilliard’s!
Starting with learning how to
navigate the library, learning how to look for books and find what we want, how
to be adventurous and choose outside the box, the class got to grips with both
reading for pleasure and reading for research.
Once they had mastered the world
of fiction and non-fiction they went forth with their presentations on such
things as Heroes, Villains, Genres, Libraries, How we choose what to read next,
Covers and illustrations and the Children’s Laureate.
Hilliard’s were working hard throughout
the third session demonstrating great team work, focus and interest in their
subjects and it showed in week five when they gave their presentations.
There was a generally high
standard across the board but the winners stood out as Hana and Heidi with
their presentation on ‘Book Covers and Illustrations’. They demonstrated clear
and confident delivery, good structure, comparing and contrasting books and
asking questions out to the audience for discussion. They included a fun game
that pitted Mr Hilliard, Jasmine and Zach in a game of Book Cover Pictionary
that got the audience cheering and learning at the same time! Very well done
both.
Next in line for a prize were
Clemmie and Iris on ‘How We Choose What to Read Next’ who created a visually appealing
PowerPoint and had learned a very engaging script encouraging us all to try
something different! They ended with a dynamic game where a contestant from the
audience had to pick a book title out of a hat and describe it in three words,
then the audience had to guess what it was, very innovative, well done!
The third pair to win a prize were
Ciaran and Noah, also on the subject of ‘How We Choose What to Read Next’! These
guys showed us exactly where to go online to find out what to read next,
clicking on the hyperlinks to show us what the websites looked like. They reminded
us how useful the Dewey Decimal Classification System was for finding what we
needed via the categories that it suggests for us. Well-prepared, shared and
delivered!
SO, we ended on a high with some
serious competition in the final quiz that reminded us just how bonkers these lot
can be with their team names: ‘Condensation Kids’, ‘Llamacadabra’, ‘Hydration Nation’
and ‘Look in the Hedge’!! Team ‘Llamacadabra’ took the prize though with 22
points out of a possible 31, beating ‘Look in the Hedge’ by 1 point! Well done
guys!
Thanks and see you again in the Library, Year
7 Hilliard’s, and thanks for a fun run of activities!
