After a year without celebrations World Book Day was back with a bang for 2022. It was so uplifting to see so many smiling faces and crazy costumes in the Library, and that was just the staff!

Banned Books Week!
Banned Books Week
24th - 30th September 2017
Come and celebrate your right to read in the Library by
getting stuck into one of the many previously banned books that we have
on display.
Censorship has been exercised for millennia and when ideas are written down and circulated, they are even more dangerous to the establishment. Some of the most subversive books have become classics over time after being publicly banned from libraries, shops and schools.
From The Bible to Where’s Wally?, no book seems safe from dispute; be it for political, moral, religious or ethical reasons or for just being too risque to be 'safe'!

BGS Mock EU Referendum
Last Friday, BGS held its mock EU referendum. Following brilliant
campaigns from both Vote Leave and Vote Remain (led by Sixth Formers Sasha and
Lilian respectively), it was great to see so
many students engaging with politics by asking questions, researching facts and
opinions, attending hustings and voting on the day.
After counting the votes in the Library, it turned out to be a decisive victory for Vote Remain with 78.6%
of the vote. Here is a detailed breakdown of the voting results:

Well done to Sasha, Lilian and
their campaign groups for running an enthusiastic and informative campaign.
Also thank you to Dr Massey and all the staff and students who supported and participated in the
referendum.

Shakespeare Day
This year marks 400 years of William Shakespeare. There will be many celebrations up and down the country to celebrate the life and
works of The Bard. At BGS we’re celebrating with Shakespeare Day on the 21st
April, a chance to dress up as characters from Shakespeare’s plays (with prizes
for the best costumes!), see Talking Heads from both staff and pupils, enjoy a
Shakespeare-themed school assembly and eat a Jacobean lunch!
