Shakespeare Day

This year marks 400 years of William Shakespeare. There will be many celebrations up and down the country to celebrate the life and works of The Bard. At BGS we’re celebrating with Shakespeare Day on the 21st April, a chance to dress up as characters from Shakespeare’s plays (with prizes for the best costumes!), see Talking Heads from both staff and pupils, enjoy a Shakespeare-themed school assembly and eat a Jacobean lunch!

Around Bristol there are some great events coming up, including:
·         University of Bristol ‘Remember me’: Shakespeare’s cultural and artistic legacy, a public debate at Wickham Theatre on the 23rd April
·         LibrarianTheatre Presents ‘The Book’s The Thing’ at Bristol Central Library on the 23rd April
·         Henry V at Bristol Cathedral the 25th-26th April
·         Hamlet at the Tobacco Factory until the 30th April

·         Welsh National Opera’s Merchant of Venice AndrĂ© Tchaikowsky at Bristol Hippodrome 11th October

The BBC are also marking the occasion with their ‘Shakespeare Festival’ a series of TV and radio shows dedicated to the playwright. Some of the shows we’re looking forward to are HorribleHistories: Sensational Shakespeare, MuchAdo About Comedy with Matt Lucas, and ShakespeareLive! From the RSC hosted by David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

Finally in the Library we are holding a Shakespeare Day Quiz, with a prize for the most correct answers. We also have several displays showcasing the life of William Shakespeare, including an ‘Inspired by Shakespeare’ display, it might surprise you to see which books and films have been influenced by his plays!
