Hilliard’s Year 7 Library Activity

It has been a fun few weeks with Hilliard’s, involving lots of enthusiasm and discussion. Notably, during week one there was a very lively debate about book covers and whether e-books are better than print books. We also found out that Y7 students in Hilliard’s are fans of classic writers such as Shakespeare, Dumas, Hugo, and Verne.  We looked at non-fiction in week two and students found some useful books for their different scenarios using the Library catalogue. There were some very imaginative choices! The Dewey quiz was keenly taken, with plenty of running round the library to find the answers.
Yet again we found it difficult to judge student presentations as Hilliard’s met and even surpassed the high standards set by their predecessors! Eventually we awarded third place to Adam and Tejas for their presentation on The Library of Congress that was delivered confidently and featured lots of unusual and interesting information.  Flo and Emilia came second with their presentation on Books vs E-books. They presented original arguments for both sides of the debate and their presentation skills were top notch.  We were particularly impressed with how they handled the questions their friends asked them!

Kate and Katy’s presentation on Book Covers and Illustrations scored the first 10 out of 10 ever and they were the deserved winners. They had a great combination of fact and opinions, had done lots of good research, and were able to deliver their presentation in a confident and engaging way. We also awarded commendations to Kian and Charlie for their excellent research skills; we were impressed with their sourcing and use of a video explaining the significance of the different colours used by Penguin in their original book covers.

In our final week we were treated to a fascinating talk by Mr Hilliard about his vintage James Bond novel collection. It was lovely to see the range of designs, but he needs to borrow Bond novels from the Library so he can read the stories without risking damage to his collection!  We also had our end- of-activity quiz in which, as usual, the music round delighted and baffled in equal measure. It was another close result with ‘Crumble’s’ 17 points placing them fourth, ‘Unicorns’ coming third with 22 points, ‘Likeeeee’ second with 23 points, and ‘Psychopathic Creeps’ winning with 24 points!

Goodbye and thank you Hilliard’s for a lively few weeks. Next week we are welcoming Goodman’s for the last library activity of the year!
