Year 7 Activity - Glenn's House

This was the first week of the first library activity for Year seven in this academic year and we were very excited because we were back in the library rather than in tutor rooms! We had a amazing house to begin with lots of lovely readers in it.

Week one

We started off with a new brand-new top five heroes and villains quiz and had lots of very good suggestions including the Snow Queen and Alex Rider. Pupils in Glenn's house definitely preferred reading the books before watching the films. They also had lots of interesting questions for us including Sid wanting to know how we choose books for the library! In terms of their favourite places to read; Anoushka loved a cupboard, Matthew loved reading upside down, Elsa loved the smallest and darkest places and Ben just wanted a blanket and snacks. But Pavani admitted she often skips the beginning of the book and then rereads it when she's finished the book as it makes more sense then!

Week two

Non-fiction week this week so we started with an explanation of The Dewey Decimal Classification system and how we use it to organise our non-fiction in the library. We then did our Dewey Dash quiz for the first time in two years! Glenn's had to get into pairs where they were given a card with a number on one side and a question on the other. This is the only time they are allowed to run in the library! All they have to do is find a book with the right Dewey number which answers the question they have been given. Glenn's threw themselves into this quiz with great vigour and our winners were Anoushka and Kami who managed six cards in total! We then played our Dewey Jeopardy quiz where the competition was very fierce, and the buzzers were very loud. Our overall winners were the yellow team (again with Anoushka and Kami in it) with 90 points closely followed by the Blue team and the Red team who had 80 points each. The Green team came a very respectable fourth with 50 points. Well done Glenn's for being brave enough to risk the difficult questions with the highest points.

Week three

After a short presentation on how to write a book review and a very long question and answer session, Glenn’s settled down to compose their two-minute presentation on their favourite book. It was so nice to be back in the library and be able to help them find their favourite books.

Week four

This week was our book review week. For many of the pupils in Glenn's house this was the first time they had presented anything to their peers and a lot of you were very nervous. However, we had some really good books reviewed and you all tried hard. The winners were as follows:

In first place was Anay with The French confection by Anthony Horowitz. Having shown us the book and given us a good plot summary, he said although the plot was complicated, he could not put it down and if you are having a bad day it would take your mind off it.

In second place was Pavani with Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. She said it was addictive and entertaining although the description of scenery was quite long.

In third place was Ruby with Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter. She had brought the actual book and said that she wished she could be a part of this world. She loved the fact that they had their own words for the four seasons and her only criticism was that it was too short. She had already recommended it to Tilly.

In fourth place was Danyal with The Creakers by Tom Fletcher. He also brought the book in and described it as a thriller/comedy. He liked the fact that at the end of each chapter the author talks to the readers and makes you feel a part of the world.

In fifth place was Anoushka with The kid who came from space by Russell Welford. She also brought the book in and gave us a good plot summary. Her favourite part was the end, and she said the themes were courage, trust, and friendship. She also told us a bit about the author.

In sixth place was Josh with Goodnight Mister Tom by Michele Magorian. He said the novel gripped him and he loved the characters' emotions. He felt it covered personal loss well although possibly there was too much slang!

All six of you did very well and received a prize.

Week Five

This week was a new departure for us as it was letter writing week! Ms Ray came with paper and card whilst the library provided the coloured pencils and string. The idea was for each pupil to write a letter to a resident at St Joseph's. Glenn’s had to write it by hand, make it neat and make it personal. They could decorate it with stickers, drawings, and anything else they wanted to. Some of your drawings and letters were really good and we are sure that the residents of St Joseph's will love receiving them.

It was a pleasure to have you in the library, Glenn's house, and we hope that we see you soon.
