Edwards' House gave us a colourful start to the new school year in
the first six weeks of term. We kicked off with some new games, tasks and
discussions. There a was heated discussion on the greatest heroes and villains in children’s literature, looking how what constitutes a hero and a villain has changed over the years. Then we discussed bad book covers and how publishers sell their books to audiences through good design, promotion and marketing. Finally we talked about the book cover characteristics of different genres, and how they give the reader an idea of the story without giving too much away.
We moved onto non-fiction in week two and after some fact sharing on the Dewey Decimal System, the class were off around the Library competing for a prize based on who could research the most topics in the given time. The high rate of correct answers in the slightly anarchic Dewey Jeopardy quiz that followed proved just how much the class had taken on board! During the following couple of weeks, the class did research on the topics they had been given and then presented their findings. And they nailed it - we had some really excellent presentations!

In second place were Oliver and Ben with a creative presentation on Book Covers & Illustrations. They were confident and clear and even included some personal anecdotes about book cover designs. Using detailed descriptions they compared and contrasted lots of different illustrations and covers in order to analyse what worked and what may not. Nicely done!
Peter and Olmo bagged first prize with their excellent presentation on How We Choose What to Read Next, citing the good old Librarian as their go to person for help with what to read next (that went down well)! But it was their original approach that caught our eye - it was like a quick Library user’s guide and “be adventurous!” was their tip of the day! They also included a list of places to look for new books including Goodreads, The Week magazine, newspapers and many others, all of which we have in the Library! Great work and very informative! All winners got to choose a brand new book.
The last week is always a “well done, thank you and good bye” quiz with music, fun facts, book stuff and of
course, prizes. Well done to team ‘Team Name’ for rising to the challenge and
only getting three questions wrong over all three rounds! Effective conferring we think!
