Edward’s House Year 7 Library Activity

It was lovely to finally meet the Year 7 Edward’s – our last house of the year! This is what we got up to in our all too short time together.

Right from the start you were very enthusiastic answering our top heroes and villains with Maeve and Annabel very surprised to get right answers - a lot of you thought the Greek legends like Medusa should’ve been in the list.

When we discussed reading for pleasure, India admitted she skips the emotional bits and EIvie always reads the last page first! Many of you had fun places to read including in a sleeping bag in a tent, under a tree by a castle, in a bath with music, and lying on the ground looking at sky. Annabelle had a very good extra right in our ‘reading rights’ which was to be able to read at your own pace. We are hoping, having shown you ‘click and collect’, that many of you will ask for books over the summer holidays and the two books we told you about this week were instantly snapped up by India and Elspeth!

Week two is always non-fiction week! Having told you all about Melvil Dewey and his classification system, we had a quick visual tour of different libraries in the world including the Library of Congress, the British Library, our own Bristol Library, and a few other cool ones.

Edward's House are very competitive, and you loved the Dewey Jeopardy quiz that we did. The scoring was very varied and as a house you definitely preferred taking a risk with the high point questions meaning there was lots of stealing of points! In the end, Team Three just edged into the lead with 220 points in front of Team One who amassed 210 points. Unfortunately, Team Two and Four had most of their points stolen from them.

After showing you a video of how to get the library and what is inside the library, we did some quick book reviews of recently published books and took some requests for books you wanted to borrow for the summer holidays.

Sadly, week three was our last week with Edward’s House. We started with a presentation on the history of BGS following on from the Charter Day video that was produced this year. Edward's were very interested in the fact that the school had a firing range just before the start of World War One.

They were not so keen on the idea of lunches in the past having no choice as to what you were given! As usual, when the quiz came round there was a lot of stealing of points and the result couldn't have been closer. This time Team Two won with six points, Team One was second with five points and Teams Three and Four were joint third with four points. We then showed them the shortlisted books for the Carnegie Prize for which the winner had just been announced. Lots of them wanted to take these books out for the summer which was great.

Our time with you was short and sweet Edward's but we really enjoyed it and we hope to see you in the library in September!
