This seems so long ago but we felt Year 7
Hilliards still deserved a blog on their excellent work during the Library
Activity last term so read on and find out more!
We had loads of good suggestions on our top 5
heroes and villains including the White Witch and Aslan from The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe and
some classical Greek villains like Medusa. We had a long discussion on books
versus films including how having the author involved in a production can make
the end result so much better. A lot of you had used ‘Click and collect’ which
was brilliant. There were some interesting places to read for pleasure
including Rozi's which was curling up on the floor with lots of blankets and
pillows – brilliant! We have lots of avid readers in this house which is
exciting.
In week 2 Hilliard house generated a lot of discussion during the presentation on nonfiction. We had fun trying to cataloguing books on chilli (Mr Hilliard’s favourite food) - from poetry to philosophy! This house definitely like to play for high stakes as we found out in the Jeopardy Dewey quiz. The winners were Team 4 who amassed an amazing 210 points!
In week 3 the lesson was spent writing up
favourite reviews helped by examples given by Mrs Godden on The alchemist by Michael Scott and Mr
Hilliard reviewing His Dark Materials
by Philip Pullman which he’s never read! We ended by having a lively discussion
on books versus ebooks - physical books definitely won that argument.
Week 4 was presentation week. All of the pupils did
a presentation and they all told us about their favourite books. The winner by
a long margin was Avi whose favourite book was Hacker by Malorie Blackman. He was so enthusiastic about telling us
about this book with all the plot twists including the only weakness being that
it was not a series!
In second place was Florence with Little Women by Louise May Alcott. She
was very enthusiastic and said that it was full of tension but sometimes it was
hard to get into and was therefore a slow burner.
In third place was Saba with Murder most unladylike by Robin Stevens. She loved the use of words and the diary effects of the narrative and gave us lots of useful information on the author.
In fourth place was Rozi with Wonder by R L Palaccio. She also gave
great information on the author and said it had a very powerful message to be
kind which is one of BGS’s guiding principles.
The final prize went to Ivo for his presentation on Ravensgate by Anthony Horowitz. He tried very hard not to give spoilers, told us it was very addictive and possibly slow to start but it is the first in 5 books and he found it funny to read and was very enthusiastic about it. Well done Hilliards! Despite Mr Hilliard breaking the bell which was used signify the end of your 2 minute presentation you all did very well!
We were sorry that lockdown meant we missed our last
session with you but we look forward to welcoming you into the library whenever
that might be in the future!!
