Here at BGS we have a particular fondness for all things Penguin. As all of you know, the founder of Penguin, Allen Lane, is an OB. His portrait hangs in the Library, smiling every time one of us browses a Penguin or a Puffin title; otherwise, looking a little severe!
Penguin have long been known for their innovative and trendsetting book covers; in fact BGS Library has a volume on the very subject Penguin By Design at 741.6. In order to tempt modern buyers away from e-book downloads, Penguin commissioned Coralie Bickford-Smith to produce beautiful cover-designs for their Penguin English Library collection. Art designer Jim Stoddart compares this to the way record companies work hard to produce art for their CDs, producing an artefact that is a pleasure to physically hold and experience.
