Combating Climate Change

On Friday 15th of March an estimated ‘1.4 million young people around the world' took part in strikes for climate action.

Many of those involved missed a day of education to protest against the lack of government action on climate change. Creative banners and chants showed the determination in these protests and the desire to make a change for everyone’s future.

Whether you joined the strikes or not, climate change is a topic that involves us all. At the Library we value the idea of knowledge is power. We have many books available for you to borrow to get clued up on this global issue and how you can help. Discussions of climate change can often include unfamiliar phrases and daunting statistics. Here are a handful of accessible resources:

There is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break it Years, Mike Berners-Lee
How Bad are Bananas?, Mike Berners-Lee
Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, Mark Lynas
Turning the Tide on Plastic, Lucy Siegle

Last month, former BBC Weatherman Bill Giles OBE asked broadcasters to include a ‘slot into the forecast that focuses properly and honestly on the Earth’s changing climate’. Clear information that the public can access is at the centre of Giles’s suggestion. From our diets to extreme weather, Giles states that this segment would include the many effects of climate change and how we can reduce this.

What would you like to see included in a climate change segment?

The chief executive of the Environment Agency has warned ‘England is set to run short of water within 25 years’. Speaking to the Guardian and at the Waterwise Conference, Sir James Bevan stated that population increases and water shortages caused by climate change would lead to this worrying result. Reducing our water usage is a pivotal part of helping to prevent this. You can read more about the threat to water supplies and how to reduce your usage below:
