For the last five weeks we have had the pleasure of the
company of Year 7 Edwards!
After an introduction to all that the Library has to offer, from
online resources to journals and magazines, the class enjoyed talking all things
book! From the top literary heroes and villains to how the blurb can affect the
way we choose our next read.
In the ‘Book Speed Dating’ session the class shared some heated discussion on how we choose a book by its cover. There were some interesting points made on the publisher’s use of different fonts, colours, illustrations and images that are there to ‘sell’ us the book from off the shelf.

The class then mastered the Dewey Decimal System and
eagerly explored the library for books on various subjects and impressed us all with how many they could find!
Edwards then took to their presentation
tasks with enthusiasm and focus and it was exciting to see them all beavering
away, using excellent team work.
The week after, the presentations began and we had some brilliant
responses to questions about:
The Library of Congress
How to Choose What to Read Next
The British Library
Book Covers and Illustrations
Favourite Author/Books
The Children’s Laureate
Books vs Films
and Penguin Publishing.

We were really impressed with the overall quality of the
presentations and most importantly, it was clear that the class enjoyed the
process!
Our winners were: Sashank, Ahmed and Daniel who shared the
responsibility for their construction and delivery perfectly. In their presentation
on the 'Library of Congress', they demonstrated original use of PowerPoint and
attentive application of facts from their online research: a model of good
presenting! Well done!

The next winners were Fergus and Chirag who chose an innovative approach to the subject of 'Books vs Films' by comparing a clip from the Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire film to a brilliant reading from the same scene in the original book. This
was inspired as it reminded us exactly what we can gain from engaging our
imagination with the written narrative compared to letting the cinema envision
it for you.
And last, but by no means least, were Maya and Ruby who
really engaged fully with the task in their detailed reflections on their 'Favourite Author and Books'. They discussed the dystopian, Science-Fiction
series, Divergent by Veronica Roth
and the Young Bond adventure-action
series by Charlie Higson. Some great recommendations, thank you!

We ended the library activity sessions with a fun quiz beginning with a ‘General Knowledge’ round that set the pace for a heated competition. Followed by a ‘Book Covers Covered’ round in which the teams were presented with images of book covers with the title and author hidden and the teams had to guess the book. The scores were evenly matched and it was looking like a three-way tie until the final round in which the teams had to guess the film from the music clips played which brought team ‘Ginga Jiwaffes’ into the lead by 1 mark and the chocolate was theirs!

Well done everyone for a great five weeks in the library and
thank you for all your contributions, see you soon!
