Malorie Blackman Announced as New Children's Laureate

This morning Malorie Blackman, author of the bestselling teen series Noughts & Crosses, was named Children’s Laureate for 2013-15.

This prestigious title is awarded once every two years to an eminent author of children’s/young adult books, celebrating their achievements and also giving them a potent advocacy platform.

Speaking after the announcement, Blackman indicated that she is keen to leverage the power of social media to encourage young readers to engage creatively with books; she hopes to launch a website to host music, art, film and text-based reactions from readers.

Blackman will also continue the good work of outgoing laureate Julia Donaldson, advocating for public libraries: "I hope to instil in every child I meet, my love and enthusiasm for reading and stories. And, as I would never have become an author if it hadn't been for my local library as a child, I intend to continue Julia Donaldson's amazing, indefatigable work advocating for our nation's public library service."

The eighth Children’s Laureate and, as of 25th November 2013, Malorie Blackman will be the fifth to visit BGS for a public event.  We are thrilled to be welcoming this literary superstar and wish her all the best for her tenure as Children’s Laureate!
