A large number of books have been banned, censored or burned
in the past and challenges to books still happen regularly in some parts of the
world. From claims of witchcraft to objections about obscenity - the reasons
for these restrictions are as diverse as the books themselves. Banned Books
Week is a celebration of the freedom to read and is co-ordinated by partners
such as the British Library and the Royal Society of Literature in association
with the American Library Association who first launched the week in 1982.
