This week was our last Library Activity with Year 7
Edwards. We started with a
session discussing favourite literary villains and heroes and then talked all
about different kinds of book covers: what reels you in and what doesn’t. The
class looked at colour, design, fonts and imagery as well as how we choose
books based on the all-important blurb and spine of the cover. Then the class
had a chance to design their own cover based on the ‘E’ for Edwards themed book
genres: Escapism Fantasy and Espionage! The group came up with some colourful
and innovative ideas, some of which will be displayed in the Library, so watch
this space!
The following week, we learned all about the
Dewey Decimal System, without which the Library would not be what it is today.
The Year 7s honed their book searching skills and with free rein of the
Library, they were off. There was some stiff competition to collect the biggest
number of appropriate books for the quick-fire research questions they were
given. Successfully warmed-up, the games continued as the class played an
enthusiastic round of “Dewey Jeopardy” and the winning team walked away with a
prize each for some serious strategic gaming.
The next couple of sessions were spent putting
these research skills to the test, preparing for their end of activity
presentation and fine-tuning those cracking book cover designs.

The final week saw some fabulous presentation
work, with well prepared and excellently shared research tasks being delivered
to the rest of the class. Some looked at their favourite books and authors, how
we choose what to read next, book covers and illustrations, some at the Library
of Congress or the British Library and some had books vs films, others, the
Dewey Decimal System.
There was some great ideas and detailed
discussions, some quizzes, some questions and some lively debate but there
could only be three winners and the best presentation went to Sienna and Hannah
for their very unique approach to questioning: Books vs Films? These two
managed to explore with us the psychological and physical health effects that
both books and films had on their audiences. Some really impressive stuff!
Our second placed pair were Joe and Charlie with How We Choose What to Read Next, and although
Charlie could not be there to present, Joe did a sterling job of sharing all
their hard work with us: emphatically reminding us that it is OUR CHOICE what
to read next. A fair and empowering sentiment that is the basis of our freedom
to read.
New illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
The third placed pair were Martha
and Laura who gave us a beautifully scripted and shared presentation on Book
Covers and Illustrations, with an informative slideshow and some confident and thought
provoking responses in the Q&A. Well done to all the participants,
we were very impressed with everyone’s efforts!
Thanks, Edwards for an action
packed six weeks, we have enjoyed talking everything book-related with you.
See you back in the Library soon!
