We have had the pleasure of Hilliard’s Year 7 class for the
last six weeks. We started with a lively conversation about the various ways we
choose what to read in the Library. Mrs Osafo then orchestrated a discussion on
the top ten literary heroes and villains from children’s, teen and young
people’s fiction which inspired the usual confusion and debate over where the
Harry Potter characters should place in the line-up!
Mr Hilliard kindly brought some boxes of his book collection
for us to see which are based on his love of Ian Fleming’s James Bond. The vast array of books Mr Hilliard had collected demonstrated
how the changing design of the front covers over time could affect the way we
read. This was a special one-off opportunity for the year 7 Library Activity
and we are grateful for Mr Hilliard’s presentation.
After another week of Library book seeking and finding
games, the Year 7s knew their way around the Dewey Decimal Classification
System and were ready for their presenting tasks. In the penultimate week we
saw some lovely examples of team work, keen planning and thorough research that
lead to creative, informative and confident presentations. The top four duos
were: Alice & Molly and Tashi & Olivia
in joint 3rd place, Livy and Ananya in 2nd place and in 1st
place, with a lovely stop-motion animation and a great script on the subject of
‘How we Choose What to Read Next’, were Sanjana and Amelia. The winning pairs won a new book each for their efforts.
As part of a presentation, the year 7s also formed their own list of recommendations for what to read next. See what they came up with below:

And finally, to see Hilliard’s off with a bit of fun, a quiz
with a general knowledge and BGS history round, a guess the book from the cover
round and a film music round which produced some memorable dance moves and
plenty of emphatic singing. It turned out that the team with the least amount
of people came out with the highest score and went home with a prize each for
their win, well done to everyone.
Thank you, Hilliard’s, see you back in the Library soon!
