Book Review – The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

What if you weren’t the chosen one? The one who is supposed to fight Zombies, soul eating ghosts and vampires. What if you just wanted to graduate from school and go to college? What if you were Mikey?

Patrick Ness explores Mikey’s dilemma beautifully, going into the depths of his OCD and anxiety disorder. This dystopian novel has a fantasy edge that I’m sure many of you will enjoy. But prepare yourself, this book isn’t for the fainthearted. It will bring tears, sadness, confusion and most of all laughter.

This book is one of my all-time favourites. It is brave, it is strong, and it is flawless. I met Patrick recently and asked him about it. He told me his editor said he could not write it, it would be too hard. Patrick told me he simply said ‘Watch me’.

I would urge everyone in this school to read The Rest of Us Just Live Here. Go to the library, it will be sitting there for you, unless I have taken it for myself! (Cue the evil laughter).
