Year 7 Library Activity with Diamond's

Our three presentation winners with their prizes

At the beginning of the academic year, we recommenced the Library Activity with a new group of Year 7 students.  First up this year was Diamond's House.

We began week 1 with a lively discussion about fiction and favourite authors. We discovered that there are some very keen readers in Diamond's including Mrs Diamond herself, who is a big fan of crime books and biographies. Before the end of the first session, everyone was asked to pick their favourite book to show to the group (and maybe inspire someone else to read it). Nearly everyone ended borrowing a book which made us librarians very happy indeed!

Week 2 saw the return of the non-fiction session, complete with the Dewey Quiz and Treasure Hunt. The aim was to help the students become familiar with where books on different subjects are located in the Library and is the only time they will ever get to run around the Library. They made full use of the opportunity!

Weeks 3 and 4 had the group working on and delivering their presentations. With subjects ranging from How To Choose A Book to Books vs. Films, we were very much looking forward to seeing a wide variety of views being presented and we were not let down. We were very impressed with the level of research that everyone had undertaken but ultimately, there could only be 3 winners.

In 3rd place came Theo with his very well researched and well-delivered presentation on Penguin Books. In 2nd place was Lottie with her presentation on Books vs Films during which she made some very good points and used very good images. The winner was Dustin who also spoke about Books vs Films. Dustin made excellent use of images in his presentation,  was very confident in his delivery and had great presentation skills.

We finished the activity in Week 5 with a quick canter through the history of the school followed by a quiz. Mrs Diamond proved extremely knowledgeable about BGS as she has been here for a long time. She is also unique in being the first female Head of House and the only person to have been a House Head  twice.

Our quiz teams were 'Teletubbies', 'M&M's', 'Group', 'California' and 'Army of Readers'.  All the teams acquitted themselves admirably and we ended up with a draw between 'Army of Readers' and 'California'. Naturally a tie-breaker ensued with 'Army of Readers' emerging victorious!

Diamond's - it was a pleasure having you as our first group of the year and we look forward to seeing many of you in the Library over the coming few months.

Next up: Scotts!
