In the last five weeks we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the incredibly competitive year 7 Edwards’. Read below to see how they got on…

We started Edwards’ Year 7 house activity with letter writing to St Joseph’s again after a quick explanation from Ms Ray. There were some great pictures drawn, and we’re sure St Joseph’s will love the cards and letters made.

Next week was fiction week, and there were some good guesses for both our top ten villains and heroes, with Dracula, Sauron, Percy Jackson and Neville Longbottom all making appearances. We discussed what makes a villain truly villainous and what makes heroes heroic. Sonny pointed out that heroes almost always fight against adversity, and Hunter said that villains who kill for pleasure are truly villainous. Most of Edwards’ preferred quiet when reading, with Katie saying that someone reading out loud next to her is like a person singing along badly to your favourite song! Harry Raj likes to read up lying on the floor to escape noise while Rebecca likes to read high up, and Clarissa preferred to read hanging over the back of her sofa.

Week 3 was our non-fiction week. As cooked chicken was Mr Edwards’ favourite food, we used the Dewey Decimal system to sort where books about chicken would go in our library including finding books on the history of KFC. The Dewey Dash was very competitive and high scoring with Buddy and Harry Raj winning 8 cards, and our Dewey Jeopardy was probably the most dramatic we’ve had yet, especially as we let you choose your own names. Team Flappers won with 200 points and stole 80 points from the other teams before they’d even answered their own question! Team Pickled Pigs scored a respectable 120 points, while Team Iconic made a great comeback, stealing 100 points to get even with Team Papa John’s at 100. Team Mandem came in last with an admirable 10 points.

You all did brilliantly with your book reviews and it was incredibly difficult to choose between you all, but we managed to narrow it down to a top four for prizes.

Katie started off our book reviews strongly with One of Us Is Lying by Karen M McManus. She decided to read this book after seeing it on social media and thought the different range of characters in the novel made it very inclusive.

Emily was next, reviewing The Pilot’s Wife by Anita Shreve. She enjoyed the characters and descriptive writing, but felt the ending was a bit too ambiguous for her liking.

Tilly started her review of Pig Boy by Malorie Blackman with a quote from the opening paragraph, as that was what got her hooked from the beginning, and we could tell how much she loved this book by how passionate she was in her review.

Last was Buddy who gave a super enthusiastic review of Gangster Granny by David Walliams. He liked how funny the book was and that he had lots of memories attached to it.

Each reviewer was asked some really great questions, especially by Sonny who asked some really outstanding questions about each book reviewed!

It was great to have such a competitive group in the library for all our challenges, and we look forward to seeing you around.
