Year 7 Library Activity

We have just finished a very enjoyable year 7 Library Activity with Hilliard’s House. Read on to find out what we got up to…

Unusually we started our new year seven house activity with letter writing rather than finishing with that. Ms Ray came to explain what Hilliard's House had to do and you got on with it with enthusiasm. Some of your pictures were amazing. Your enthusiasm was so infectious that Ms Ray gave you all positive behavioural points.

Week two was fiction week and you all appear to be avid readers judging by your suggestions for the top five heroes and villains. Noah was very disappointed James Bond did not appear and Mr Hilliard was equally disappointed that Doctor Who was not present whilst Winnie the Pooh was the best wrong guess for being a hero. Georgiana had actually read the article the quiz was based on so had a head start on everyone else! Milly definitely preferred books to films although Noah disagreed with Mrs G's verdict that the Percy Jackson films were rubbish! In terms of where you all like to read...Daisy and Tiggy liked small spaces whilst others just needed a bean bag.

Daisy felt it was unhealthy to read excessively and Kane admitted to skipping the boring parts of books. Hanqi pointed out that poetry was best read out loud. We managed to finish with a few minutes to spare so that you could browse the shelves and find something to read for pleasure.

Week three and Nonfiction week! This week Hilliard's House were put into four teams so their knowledge of non-fiction could be pitted against each other. Having listened to the presentation on the Dewey Decimal system, they had lots of suggestions about where books on ‘Scouse’ or Irish stew could go which was Ms Poole’s favourite food.

The Dewey Dash was very loud and fast and for the first time we had three winners. Millie and Poppy, Ollie and Noah, and Kit and Hanqi all got six books which they managed to find in the chaos. The Dewey Jeopardy quiz was an extremely high scoring game, and all the teams used their buzzers to great effect to steal points. In the end the Blue Team (Ollie, Noah, Hanqi, Alex, Kit, and Harry) just pipped first place with 200 points. The Yellow Team with 190 points were only just beaten to 2nd place. The Red and Green Teams battled for third and fourth places with the Red Team gaining 90 points and the Green Team getting a very respectable 80 points. Well done Hilliard’s – you really listened hard in the presentation and that showed.

Week four was the week where you all worked on your book reviews.

Once we had explained what we wanted from a book review, you all went and worked on your favourite book. Apart from a 10-minute time out sorting out Hilliard sweatshirts and t shirts, you worked really well and we were all looking forward to hearing all your book reviews next week.

Hilliard's, you are an amazing house and you proved this in our final week together! Your book reviews were all incredible and it was hard to choose winners. In the end we just had a top six which we couldn't put in order, so we gave you all a prize.

Milly's book was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling. She had memorised her book review and delivered it well with a lovely quote to start off with. She showed us the book and summarised the plot and said that she loved the description in the story. It made her feel she was really there.

Isla's book was I Cosmo by Carlie Sorosiak. Having shown us the book she explained that Cosmo was a dancing dog who was worried that his owners were going to get divorced. She said it was based on a true story and although the divorce bit was a bit sad, the characters reminded her of herself. She loved the book so much she named her dog Cosmo.

Kane reviewed the book Teeming Universe by Christian Cline which was about alien evolution on 11 imaginary planets. He named all the planets and said the only weakness of the book was that the aliens seemed similar to well-known animals and humans. However, it had a lot about space travel, evolution and biology and he thought we ought to add it to our library. We agreed!

Lilly's book was a Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson. She said it made her believe in perseverance and was very ‘bingeable’. She said the plot twists were unexpected and she was on the edge of her seat. She also enjoyed the mixed formats of the book which included pictures, texts, and pod casts.

Theo's book was from the series of Warriors and was the first one called Into the Wild by Erin Hunter. He said there was lots of detail and lots of cliff-hangers and in his opinion, there were no weaknesses. The book was perfect!

Finally, Poppy's book was Holes by Louis Sachar. She said it was very good at making her feel like you were actually there. She did a very good plot summary and refused to tell Mr Hilliard any spoilers.

Well done Hilliard's House. It was a pleasure having you in the library and we hope to see you all soon.
